Description
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. It offers stunning mountain views, peaceful forests, and beautiful villages. If you’re looking for a trek that is easy, scenic, and full of culture, this is the perfect choice.
The highlight of the trek is watching the sunrise from Poon Hill (3,210 meters). Early in the morning, you hike up for about an hour to reach the top. The view from here is magical. You can see snow-covered peaks like Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare (Fishtail), and Dhaulagiri shining in the morning light.
Ghorepani is a charming village surrounded by rhododendron forests. In spring (March to April), the entire forest blooms with colorful flowers. The village also has great mountain views and warm hospitality from the local Gurung and Magar communities.
This traditional Gurung village is another beautiful stop on the trek. Ghandruk has stone-paved paths, local museums, and lovely guesthouses. You can also wear traditional Gurung clothes and take photos with a mountain backdrop.
The steep stone steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri are both challenging and fun. They offer a great workout and some fantastic views along the way.
Budget travelers can do this trek for around $25–$35 per day, including food, lodging, and permits.
Mid-range options cost about $40–$60 per day.
Hiring a guide and porter adds to the cost but gives you more comfort and safety.
To reach the starting point (Nayapul or Hile): First, take a tourist bus or a short flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. From Pokhara, a taxi or jeep takes you to Nayapul in 1.5 to 2 hours.
You return to Pokhara by the same route after finishing the trek.
Always greet locals with “Namaste” and a smile.
Dress modestly, especially in villages.
Respect local customs and ask before taking photos of people.
Hotel Snow Land (Ghorepani) – Basic but clean with warm meals and friendly service.
Shikhar Guesthouse (Tikhedhunga) – Good for budget trekkers, offers hot showers and comfortable rooms.
Hilltop Lodge (Ghorepani) – Offers great views, better food options, and cozy rooms.
Gurung Cottage (Ghandruk) – A peaceful stay with good facilities and local décor.
Luxury Lodge in Ghandruk (like Himalaya Lodge by Ker & Downey) – Modern comforts with traditional charm, great views, and gourmet meals.
Note: Luxury lodges are limited on this trail, but some offer upgraded rooms and better services.
Since this is a trekking route, most meals are served in teahouses or lodges. Here’s what to try:
Dal Bhat – The traditional Nepali meal with rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles. Great energy food for trekkers.
Tibetan Bread and Pancakes – Tasty breakfast options.
Momos (dumplings) – Available in many flavors, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.
Ginger Lemon Honey Tea – A soothing drink to keep you warm on the trail.
Lodges usually have menus approved by the trekking association, and food is clean and safe to eat.
Spring (March to May): Warm weather and blooming rhododendrons.
Autumn (September to November): Clear skies and excellent mountain views.
Winter (December to February): Cold but peaceful, fewer trekkers.
Monsoon (June to August): Rainy, slippery trails, not ideal for trekking.
